Sauron Klodt

Sauron Hanzomir Klodt walked across the Rainbow Bridge on March 13, 2024. He was born on April 3rd, 2012, in a Siamese litter down in Ottumwa, Iowa. He ironically was the runt of the litter, and also the only black kitten with the distinguished facial features of a Siamese. The rest of his siblings had their traditional markings, but Saur stood out from day one, a small little ball of darkness and love. His mama, Lil, went and got him and sneaked him into her room back home (against her mother’s knowledge or wishes.) The next day, when she went to school, her mom noticed the tiny meows coming from her room, and that’s when Sauron was officially introduced to the Klodt family.

He was named after Sauron, not because he was a menacing figure, but rather, due to the elegance, strength, and intelligence he carried himself with. Lil and him spent countless hours re-watching the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy throughout his kittenhood into his adulthood. He recognized each time they said his name throughout the movies, and purred when listening to the soundtrack.
Throughout his years, Sauron developed into the best companion possible. As other kittens were introduced into the family, Sauron took it upon himself to watch over them, groom them, and teach them the ropes on “how to be a cat.” He also loved his big brother Benson, a sweet golden retriever who was added to the family around the same time as Saur.

In March of 2015, while his mama Lil was at college, Sauron went missing. It was an excruciating time, wondering where he could be. The Klodt family didn’t give up on him and kept searching for months. In December of that year, right before Christmas, they got a tip that a large black cat was found on the North side of town. Naturally, grandma Casey went to go investigate. As soon as she got to the house and Sauron saw her, he meowed and jumped right into her arms. It was truly a Christmas miracle to have our sweet boy back home safe and sound. But still we wonder... how did he end up over there?! Did he seriously walk across the bridge?! Or was it because he loved sneaking into people’s cars when the windows were down… the world may never know!

Sauron had an affinity for knowing when someone was upset. He would climb right up on you, lay on your shoulder, and knead your collarbones to give you extra loving and support. He’d purr and lick your tears right off of your face. In March of 2018, Sauron was officially deemed an emotional support animal, and went everywhere with his mama, Lil.

Sauron also had a great love for human food, even though he was well-spoiled with both wet and dry cat food. He’d steal pepperonis off of pizza, break into the bread loaves, and drink tea like a distinguished gentleman. He even stole his sister Katy’s Taco John’s right out of her hands! Devious as ever.

He would wander around his turf outside, but never stray too far. He loved laying in the garden beds and underneath the hostas around the tree in the front yard. He’d befriend any stray cats that were kind to him, and fight off any that threatened him or the other Klodt cats. He was definitely more of a lover and not a fighter.

Sauron is survived by his little sisters Moona and Sophie Jane. He was preceded in death by his nephew Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus; sister Noelle Klodt; and brother, Benson William Klodt.

We will always remember Sauron just as he was: kind, loving, strong, beautiful, intelligent, and a true Dark Lord.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
