Zachary Aaron Swanberg
Des Moines, Iowa

Zachary “Zach” Aaron Swanberg, 43, passed away on December 1, 2024 at his home in Des Moines. His sudden death was an unexpected medical emergency of shock and disbelief.

Zach was born on February 3, 1981 in Hamburg, Iowa at Grape Memorial Hospital. He attended elementary schools in Mason City and Clarion, Iowa, middle school and high school in Marshalltown, Iowa and graduated in May of 1999.

Zach had started working in the food service as a culinary chef at the age of 14. He attended MCC in Marshalltown for general studies. He then joined the carpenters’ union at the encouragement of Craig Johnson in July of 2000. He loved being in the Carpenters Union Local 106. His joy was seeing his crew succeed as a whole and as individuals. He lit up a room no matter where he was at. He joined the Carpenters Union Local 106 Executive Board in June of 2024. He was very proud to be part of something so important to him.

“Education without action does nothing” quoted by Zach Swanberg

Zach enjoyed life, cooking (smoking meat), league bowling, until a shoulder injury turned that into recreation only. Playing drums, golfing and listening to music. Watching his favorite teams play, the Boston Red Sox and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Zach was known for his shenanigans and mischievous play. But above all of this, he cherished and loved his family and friends.

Zach is survived by his wife, Cassie Swanberg of Des Moines; children, Joe Killen (19), Ethan Swanberg (17), Kiera Swanberg (16), Brennen Swanberg (14) and Isabella Killen (7); parents, Jerald Glen Swanberg and Wanda Lou Stewart Swanberg; sister, Maria (Tysen) Landmesser; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; mother-in-law, Pam Lage; 5 nieces and 4 nephews.

He is preceded in death by his uncles and aunts, Dennis Stewart, LaVonne Stewart, Gene Bothwell, Phyllis Christenson, Joe Swanberg, Wanda McColley and Anita Nuzum.

Family will greet guests on Friday, December 6, 2024 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Lutheran Church of Hope Ankeny, 520 NW 36th Street, Ankeny, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at the church.
