Virginia Ruth Murrow Thomas

Virginia Ruth Thomas, age 93, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at Prairie Vista Village in Altoona. Virginia was born January 30, 1932 to Ward and Jennie (Hotka) Murrow. She was the middle child.

On November 26, 1950, she married Donald Thomas at the Mitchellville Christian Church. They had three children, Bruce, Brenda and Bernice.

She was employed by Meredith Publishing in her younger years. Once all their children were in school she was a cook at Southeast Polk Schools. She was last employed by Allied Insurance in Des Moines.

She enjoyed gardening, Iowa State basketball games, being a 4-H leader and assisting with providing an evening meal to kids once per week at the church. In her later years, she liked sitting outside with Don and visiting with neighbors. Don and Virginia also enjoyed several bus trips. Any chance she and Don would get they would coffee with others at the Senior Center in Mitchellville. Virginia enjoyed putting puzzles together and visiting with people. She always loved seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; sister, Dorothy Gulling and daughter, Bernice Blake.

She is survived by her son, Bruce (Bev) Thomas of Newton, Brenda (Kevin) Askland of Arkansas; son-in-law, Dave (Lori) Blake of Des Moines; brother, Donald (Margie) Murrow of Arizona; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and brother-in-law, Bob Gulling.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Mitchellville Christian Church, 210 3rd St NW, Mitchellville with interment to follow at Mitchellville Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated to her favorite charities. They may be mailed to Prairie Vista Village, In Care of the Concierge, 2785 1st Avenue S., Altoona, IA 50009.
