Service Details

Vera Elizabeth Scott Allen, born January 19, 1956, to Edna Mae (Curry) Scott and John Henry Scott.

She received her education in the Philadelphia and Camden Public School Systems.

Independent at an early age, Vera moved to the Breezewood section of Pittsburgh in the early 1980’s. After several years, missing her hometown and family, she moved back closer to home to the Roxborough section of Philadelphia. Vera then held several office jobs while taking on the responsibility of raising her niece, Sabrina. As family was a very integral part of her life, Vera, affectionately known as Yee-Yee, often provided guidance and counsel to her many nieces and nephews.

Vera accepted Christ into her life at an early age and always found a church home no matter where she lived. Always centering Christ in her life, Vera met the love of her life, Paul Allen during a New Years Eve church service in 1998. Vera married Paul on March 17, 2000. They started married life in St. Petersburg, Florida, living near Tampa, working as an office clerk. Soon after marriage, Vera faced some health obstacles that left her with diminished speaking ability. However, Vera was always joyful, had a beautiful smile, and spirit. As their marriage progressed, Paul’s work took them to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Greensboro, North Carolina, Jacksonville, Florida, Omaha, Nebraska and in 2017, finally to Des Moines, Iowa. Vera and Paul found their church home at the Hickman Road Church of Christ. She attended services there until the Covid epidemic where she transitioned to Facebook services. She enjoyed her yearly trips back to Camden, New Jersey, (her hometown), every Labor Day for family gatherings. Seen as the Matriarch of her family, Vera was always warmly embraced during these visits and had family dinners thrown in her honor whenever she visited.

Vera never let health issues stop her from living life to the fullest. In addition to spending time with her husband, she enjoyed their travels together including several cruises and trips to Las Vegas and Hawaii.

In 2024, her strength would be tested by several hospitalizations. Vera’s faith, and trust in God’s plan was an inspiration to all who met and knew her. She always had a smile and gentle touch even though she suffered from constant pain from years of dialysis and other ailments. On Monday, September 16th unable to be dialyzed, she came home and, at 5:37 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, transitioned to her eternal rest, never to feel pain anymore.

Vera is survived by her loving husband Paul Allen; nephews, Peyton Robinson, Brian Hinkle, Edward Summers, August Summers, Anthony Pettus and Marquis Pettus; nieces, Sabrina Hinkle, Xori Summers, Breanna Reynolds and Melissa Baskerville; cousins, Anna Petus, Vanessa Baskerville, Dawn Fussell, Deneen Fussell, Barbara Fussell and Francis Scott; in-laws, Ernestine Mosely, Brent and Dee Allen, Melvin and Yvonne Allen and Mike Allen. She also was loved and adored by many other nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Hickman Road Church of Christ, 5217 Hickman Road. Vera will will be laid to rest in Camden, New Jersey.

John 14:2-3
My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you
that I am going there to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with
me that you also may be where I am.
