Thomas Howard Allen II

Thomas Howard Allen II, a proud Marine, loving father and grandpa, passed away peacefully on September 8th, 2024, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his daughters.

Thomas "Tom" Allen was born on March 15th, 1931, to Thomas and Louise (Pikering) Allen and spent most of his life in Des Moines, Iowa. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1949 to 1963 and also in the Air National Guard. After his time serving in the military, Tom devoted 30 years to a fulfilling career as a driver and retired from Yellow Freight in 1994. He remained active in the community as a member of the American Legion and Marine Corps League.

Tom was the kind of person who never left a room without making you laugh, and he always made sure you left with a smile. Whether he was cracking jokes or enjoying time with family, he had a way of making every moment more enjoyable. Tom loved the simple joys in life—bowling, fishing, spending time at the lake on his boat, and sharing laughs with the people he loved most. Those who knew him will always remember the warmth he brought into their lives and the lasting impact he had on everyone around him.

Thomas is survived by his daughters, Lorrie (Chris) Cottrill, Diana (Kenneth) Newhouse, and Cherie Kuebler; his sister, Goldie McVey; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Thomas is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Louise Allen; his sons, Robert B. Allen, Robert L. Allen, and Thomas Allen; his daughter, Kathy Allen, and his brother, Robert H. Allen.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, located at 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 12:00 p.m.. Thomas will be laid to rest with full military honors at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa, at 2:00 p.m.
