Steven Mark Clay
Des Moines, Iowa
Steven Mark Clay, 64, passed away on January 28, 2025 in Urbandale. He was born on December 13, 1960 to Joseph and Jennie (Tonelli) Clay in Des Moines.
Steve worked at Principal Financial and Meredith Drive Reformed Church. In his youth he loved biking around the streets of Des Moines and enjoyed the outdoors. As he grew older his caring heart grew and he always found a way to brighten anybody’s day. Throughout his life he found ways to serve his local community and his church community. His children were his pride and joy; he supported his son, Tim, in the Hawkeye Marching Band and his daughter, Katy in her wrestling manager days. In his later years he became a pillar of the Senior Suites of the Urbandale community. His legacy will be one of a kind and generous man who never hesitated to help those around him.
Steve is survived by his son, Tim Clay; daughter, Katy (Justin) Lajoie; brother, Brian (Carol) Clay and nieces, Jordyn and Reagan Clay.
He is preceded in death by his father, Gene Clay; mother, Jennie Clay and brother Tom Clay.
Family will greet guests on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. A funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at the funeral home. Steve will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Ave., Des Moines.
Steve’s family would like to thank the Senior Suites of Urbandale for providing impeccable care for their dad over the last 8 years. They also want to extend their gratitude to “mean nurse” Melinda!

I am sorrowful to hear about Steve's passing. I worked with Steve for 8 years and had the pleasure of being one of the many people that cared for him. Steve was a bright spot of my day and always put a smile on my face!! I will never forget the offers of Coke Cola and the bite size Snickers when he thought I needed a pick me up. Steve you will be missed.

We met the family when working with Steve's mother Jennie (my dear friend)...my son was in the scouts with Brian & we had many good times with the family. I fondly remember my days of working with Steve at The Principal Financial Group. We worked hard but also had a ton of fun. What a super nice guy: always willing to help and do what was necessary to get the job done. My thoughts and prayers are with Steve's family. May God comfort you in the days ahead as you begin your grief journey. Hold the memories tight.

Brian,
The Andrson's from 15th St., remember with much fondness all the times we would ride bikes around the neighborhood. Finding Steve as our check out clerk at the old HyVee was so great. He cared for us with our groceries as well as a kind word or story to make us laugh. Brian, may you know that Steve is with the Angels now. Your family is being held in the comforting arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. Take Care.

My Deepest Sympathy for you and your family. Nothing but fond memories came from your family and home. You had the best home on the street, right next to the clay pit. Many many memories. Your mom's Bible studies and Caroling at Christmas. It was a large part of my childhood. May God Bless You!!

It is with great sadness I mourn the death of Steve. I knew Steve from my earliest memories as I was part of the “15th street gang.” I have so many memories but most of all, I’ll remember Steve as a gentle and loving man. Now that he’s seen Jesus face to face, he is home. May he rest in peace and may all his family and friends mourn his loss well.
