Service Details

Sharon Farrar, 78, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away Sunday, March 17, 2024 after an extended illness, at Methodist Hospital surrounded by her children.

Born Sharon Sue Lineback, April 17, 1945 to Arthur and Fairy Dell (Dyke) Lineback near Batavia, Iowa. She graduated from Fremont High School in 1963. Sharon married Robert Wayne Farrar on March 9, 1968, their wedding shower having been held in the old Vandalia schoolhouse. Born to this union were two children, Dannette Sue and Robert Wayne II.

The family loved to travel the American West and Sharon especially enjoyed photography, her talent being evidenced by a well-organized and a composed collection of their vacation photos over the years. Sharon worked outside of the home at several vocations. When beginning her career in healthcare, she worked first at the old Northwest Hospital in Des Moines, and then Des Moines General Hospital and later with Iowa Clinic Urology. During these years her titles included CNA, Ward Clerk, Secretary and Staffing Coordinator as well as a Certified CPR instructor.

In her retirement, Sharon enjoyed time with her children and pets and even more so her “grand-dogs and grand-cats”. Each day lunch was usually a ham sandwich and Samson the Corgi is always sure to get a bit of ham from her. But Sharon was especially fond of babies and wasn’t a bit afraid to introduce herself to someone for the chance to hold and coo over a baby.

Keeping a sharp mind, she could be found all hours of the day sitting at her dining table with an ever-full cup of coffee, a puzzle book, pencil in hand, and frequently a good mystery or romance novel. Sharon was happy to receive visitors or anyone stopping in, by often trying to get you involved in helping to solve whatever puzzle she was currently working on and would even have your favorite beverage waiting in the fridge for you.

Sharon’s deep love and care for her family was made manifest by always putting other’s needs before her own. Whether she was preparing her famous Meatloaf Burgers with secret sauce or a pineapple upside down birthday cake. Sharon made sure everyone who sat at her table was well fed and conversation flowed for hours. Over the years, she opened the doors of their humble home to extended family; either in a period of convalescence, a college student needing a bit of help, or just until you got on your feet again.

Sharon kept a little garden out back and her favorite flowers were Sweet William, roses, carnations and bachelor buttons. She loved fishing and collected garden gnomes and turtles.

Sharon is survived by her daughter Dannette Sue Lautenbach, son Robert Wayne (Stephanie) Farrar II, her brothers Charles and Robert (Abbie) Lineback and her sister, Lois Hurt; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Wayne Farrar, her parents Arthur and Fairy Dell Lineback and son-in-law Russell Lautenbach.

Family will be greeting friends Saturday, March 30th, 2024 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Memorial service will follow at 2:00pm.
