Sam Ang Kong was born on June 11, 1944 in Pursat, Cambodia to Orr Kong and Sor Ann. He passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2024 in Des Moines. Sam brought his family to the United States fleeing war torn Cambodia in June of 1979. As a refugee, he was extremely proud of his American Citizenship in his adopted home.
Sam finished school in 1965 and joined the Air Force where he was stationed at Battambong. Sam was captured and held hostage by Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sady Noun in 1966 in Krakor Pursat, Cambodia and together they had 5 children. Sam started his work career at Lutheran Hospital in 1979. He then worked for and retired from Armstrong Tires, Pirelli Tires and Titan Tires - 1982-2011. He loved fishing, taking walks with Sady, the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones and the Kansas City Chiefs. Sam enjoyed traveling with his family in his pride and joy, Chevy Gladiator Van. His most cherished moments were spent playing with his grandchildren and spending time with his family, especially Chaser the cat.
Sam is survived by his loving wife, Sady; children, Sokha (Chhoum), Dowie (Jefferson) Lundquist and Andy Kong; 4 grandchildren, Kevin, Alvin, Raksmei and Sonja and Chaser the cat.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Sokun and Sokthor Kong and grandson, Kevin Kong.
Family will greet guests on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Following visitation there will be a ceremony at 11:00 a.m.
