Roger George Landwehr
Des Moines

Roger G. Landwehr, died on Saturday December 2, 2023 at the age of 100 in Des Moines Iowa.

Roger was born July 1, 1923 in St. Cloud, MN to John and Ida Landwehr. After graduating from Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, Roger attended St. John’s University for two years. In November 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy and served in the “Battle of Okinawa”. After the war he completed his engineering degree at Iowa State University in Ames.

After graduating from ISU, Roger married his first love, Mary Elizabeth Doerner on September 9, 1947. Roger and Mary were blessed with 48 years of marriage and 7 children. After Mary’s death, Roger found love for the second time in his life and married Doris Mildred Dinsmore on November 30, 1996. Roger and Doris were blessed with 22 years of marriage. Alleluia!

Roger worked as a civil engineer for The Weitz Company for 34 years, was instrumental in developing Des Moines into the city center it is today, and retired from Weitz as chief engineer. Roger designed and built multiple dwellings for his family over the years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling, dancing, and classical music events with his wives, as well as woodworking and nature.
Roger led by example in showing Christ to others that he met along his journey. He prayed daily with Mary & Doris. The Rosary was an important part of his prayer life and he led others in this prayer onboard his naval ship, in his home, at his church and ultimately at Calvin Community. Roger was a true example to us of how to bear your earthly crosses with grace and dignity.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents John and Ida; siblings Eunice Weber, Ione Landwehr, Father Maurice Landwehr and Francis Landwehr; wives Mary and Doris; and sons Steven and Kenneth.

Those left to cherish his name will remember his witty humor, easy going nature and his intense love for God and family. Roger was survived by his son Peter; daughters Rebecca Shrimplin and Mary Terese Baker, sons David and John – and their families, including 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 pm on Sunday December 10th at Hamilton’s near Memory Gardens in Des Moines, IA with a rosary at 4:30. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, December 11th at All Saints Parish in Des Moines, IA. Immediately following the service there will be a luncheon at the church, after which the burial will be at Merle Hay Chapel Hill Gardens.

Memorial contributions can be made in Roger’s memory to Suncrest Hospice, Calvin Community Good Samaritan Fund or All Saints Catholic Church in Des Moines.
