Richard Murphy

Richard James Murphy, 87, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023. He was born on January 15, 1936 in Davenport, Iowa to Joseph and Mary (Monnier) Murphy. Richard married Margaret Ohnemus on June 16, 1956 at the Basilica of St. John in Des Moines.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, November 3, 2023 at SS. John and Paul, 1401 1st Ave S, Altoona. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday at the church with a vigil service at 7:00 pm. Burial will follow services at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Dick’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He was a man of strong faith and loved his family and Lord dearly. Dick was a founding member of SS. John and Paul where he was the resident handy-man, and member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Tool & Die maker at John Deere in Ankeny, IA for more than 40 years and retired from the Army National Guard where he served from 1953 to 1974.
Dick is survived by his sons, Deacon Timothy (Susan), Christopher, Mark (Kathleen), Thomas (Mary), David and Robert Murphy; grandchildren, John (Stephanie) Murphy, Amy (Christopher) Greteman, Hollie, Megan (Adam) Hook, Gregory (Laura) and Kathleen Murphy; great-grandchildren, Logan and Bryce Murphy and Marissa and Ava Greteman; brothers, Michael (Susan) and Patrick (Karen); brothers-in-law, Leo and Carl (Diane) Ohnemus; sister-in-law, Maureen Murphy; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret; brother, Tom, sisters, Rose Marie and Mary Jo; and daughters-in-law Susan and Rhonda.

All my love to the Murphy clan - Dick touched each of our hearts in a kind, loving and comical way. He is a treasure to hold in our hearts forever. I will miss him and his home-made cards to his "favorite niece" Many virtual hugs!
