Monte Claire Nelson

Monte Claire Nelson passed away on November 3, 2024, after battling cancer.

Monte was born to Telford (Tobe) and Myrtle Nelson in Scarville, Iowa, on May 2, 1937. His family moved to Lyons, South Dakota, where he attended Lyons High School. Following high school, Monte joined the Navy. After his service in the Navy, he began employment at A.Y. McDonald Supply, where he remained for 44 years until he retired in 2002. Monte married Mae Schrag in 1967 and they lived in Mitchell, South Dakota, until moving to Des Moines in 1969. He loved his family, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed bowling.

Left to mourn Monte’s passing are his wife, Mae; his sons, Lance and Chad (Tana); his grandchildren, Evan Pflughaupt and Andrew Nelson; his brothers, Don, Terry (Carol), Keith (Peg); and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Nelson.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Doug; and his sister-in-law, Mona.

At Monte’s request, no visitation or funeral service will be held. He had requested his body be donated to science.
