Melvin Douglas Haygood, Sr. was born February 9, 1949, to Will and Wilda Haygood in Tallassee, Alabama. They relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he joined the United States Navy in 1968. After being honorably discharged, Doug moved to Des Moines, Iowa. In 1983, he began his career at the City of Des Moines as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 2004. The highlight of his life was playing cards, talking on the phone to his best friend Merrill, and cracking jokes with his family. Doug was a card shark. He knew how to set a deck of cards. Doug was loved by many. He went home to be with the Lord on September 22, 2024.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Will and Wilda Haygood, his four brothers Will Jr., Herman, Harold and Marvin, his sister Arlinda Lewis, his granddaughter Hennessy, his grandsons Jermiah Haygood and Delsean Berry, his nieces and nephews Sandra Butts, Emmett Butts II, Donald Haygood II, Mike Brown Jr., Tyrone and Carletta Haygood.

He leaves to cherish his memory his only daughter Donella Haygood, son Melvin Haygood Jr. (DJ), his bonus daughter Bonita Berry, his grandchildren Skai, Anthony, Ar’Keavious, Teondrae, Teondrane, Odyssey and Shamarie, his adopted daughter MarQuaisha, his great-granddaughter Iyla Haygood (Pooty), sisters Ann Brown and Dorothy Butts, brother Donald Haygood I, and many loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial with military honors will take place at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
