Mae "Mae Baby" Blackwell
April 10, 1957 — November 21, 2023
Mae “Mae Baby” Blackwell
of Des Moines, Iowa
Mae Blackwell, age 66, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 21, 2023. She was born the daughter of Gus and Ida Mae Blackwell on April 10, 1957 in Des Moines, Iowa.
In the nurturing embrace of Bishop and Mother Eppright, Mae blossomed in her spiritual journey as a devoted, longstanding member of the Faith Tabernacle Church of God and Christ. Her heart overflowed with affection for her cherished church community, where she found solace and unwavering devotion.
A true embodiment of kindness, Mae possessed a heart of pure gold, always ready to extend a helping hand or open her home to those in need, especially children, whom she cared for with boundless love. Her generosity knew no bounds, as she selflessly gave and nurtured countless young lives, leaving an indelible mark of warmth and compassion.
Mae found immense pride in her four accomplished children, each a testament to her unwavering support. Her eldest son, David, pursued a noble path as a college Professor, while her beloved daughter Marquetta served the community as a Probation Parole Officer. Mikia, her youngest daughter, embraced a career as a dedicated Registered Nurse, and Jake the (youngest/baby) found his calling as a Women’s Collegiate Basketball Coach, each achievement a source of immeasurable joy for Mae.
The heart of Mae's world revolved around her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose presence illuminated her life with sheer delight and happiness. Their love for their grandma Mae was so profound that one of her grandbabies earned the endearing nickname "Joy," a testament to the happiness she radiated.
During her leisure moments, Mae found solace in the simple pleasures of life—solving crossword puzzles, delving into the wisdom of her cherished Bible, and being uplifted by the soulful melodies of gospel music. She found joy in the company of her cherished furry companions and relished serene car rides. Among her passions was a profound admiration for Steve Harvey and an unwavering dedication to watching Family Feud.
Mae's passing has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her, her absence deeply felt and profoundly mourned.
Those blessed to carry Mae's memory in their hearts include her devoted children: David Jackson III, Marquetta Jackson, Mikia Burkett, and Jake Marshall III, along with her seven beloved grandchildren. Her legacy extends to five cherished great-grandchildren, sister MarrGenea McMillion, brothers Jerry Berry, Lloyd (Stephanie) Blackwell, and Pierre Blackwell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mae was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Gus and Ida Mae Blackwell, and her dear sister, Gussie Blackwell Ford, leaving behind a tapestry of memories woven with love and grace.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Faith Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, 131 9th Street, West Des Moines. Private burial will be held at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Miss Mae was a shining light for me as a teenager in our friend group. When times were hard for me in my home, Miss Mae showed me kindness and created a place of refuge for me. I will be grateful forever to her. Her passing truly saddens me. May she rest in heaven forever.

I send my love, sympathy and condolences to my Iowa family. I have so many fond memories of Mae and I growing up together between 25th & 27th St. on Woodland; we were inseparable in those days. I am grateful to have those memories and I will always cherish them. I know you were tired Mae, but as II Tim. 4:7 says, "You have fought a good fight, you finished the race and you kept the faith." I will love you Always and Forever.
