Maria (Pandullo) Astone

Maria (Pandullo) Astone, 87, passed away on November 20, 2024, at the Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, Iowa.

Maria was born on July 22, 1937, to Gabriel and Armida (DeConcillis) in Agropoli, Italy. She grew up and attended grade school in Agropoli. In 1970, Maria traveled to the United States to live. Three years after moving to the states, Maria married the love of her life, Luigi Gino Astone, and with this union they had their only child, Gino Astone. Luigi and Maria were members of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines.

Maria was an avid cook and even worked as a chef for the Ramada Inn and Old Country Buffet. Along with her customers she served as a chef, her family admired her cooking as well. Maria would be the cook for all holiday meals and family get-togethers and was especially praised for her famous Italian cakes. In 1993, Maria began working for Unity Point Health as an Environmental Services Associate and eventually retired in 2016. Along with her passion for cooking, Maria also loved to garden. Maria’s love and devotion truly shined when it came to her family. She was very family oriented and cherished any moment she got to spend with them.

Maria is survived by her husband, Luigi; her son, Gino; her nieces, Elaine, Lisa, Sarah, Gabriella, and Armida; her nephews, David, Stephen, and Giuseppe; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents; Gabriel and Armida Pandullo; her siblings, Tullio, Achille, and Marianna; her sister-in-laws, Diane and Anita; her nephews, Achille and Robert; and her niece, Elenora.

Family will be greetings friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., including a Rosary service at 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church; 15 Indianola Avenue, Des Moines. Maria will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
