Luigi G. Astone

Luigi Gino Astone, 85, passed away January 10, 2025 at the Carlisle Care Center in Carlisle, Iowa.
Luigi Astone was born February 8, 1939 in Agropoli Italy. He served in the Italian Navy for 5 years during which time he traveled extensively. Luigi also gave several haircuts while in the Navy. Upon his return to Italy, he and his brother opened a barber shop, Luigi later opened a second barber shop as well. In the 1970’s while living in the United States, Luigi worked as a cook for the Ramada Inn. He later retired from the Des Moines Public School System where he had been a Boiler Engineer for many years. In 1973, Luigi married the love of his life, Maria Pandullo, and with this union they had their only child, Gino Astone. Luigi and Maria were members of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Des Moines.
Luigi loved soccer and played professionally for Italy. After moving to the United States, he played with a recreational group of Italian men. Luigi loved to cook. He was a “giver”, always giving gifts and his time to others. As a way of showing his respect, he would prepare a delicious meal for someone and sit down to enjoy the meal with them. He was a dog lover. Luigi also enjoyed the outdoors. He loved going for walks and walking his dogs.
Luigi is survived by his son, Gino; brothers, Angelo Astone and Aldo Astone; sister, Maria Rosaria Astone; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Camine and Rosa Marino Astone; brother, Gennaro Astone; sister, Maria Rosario and Annamaria Astone; and his beloved wife, Maria Astone.
The family will greet friends Tuesday, January 21, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with the Rosary prayed at 7:00 pm at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home; 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, January 22nd at 10:00 am at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Avenue. Luigi will be laid to rest with his beloved wife, Maria at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
