Linda Faye Sargent
October 09, 1947 — May 10, 2025
Linda Faye Sargent was born on October 9, 1947 to Bernard and Dorothy (Allgood) Sargent of Des Moines, Iowa. She was named after the song “Linda” that was popular that year, a favorite of Dorothy’s.
Linda passed away on May 10, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, after a brief illness. There are many who loved her and will miss her.
Linda was an only child, and lived her entire life in her family home on the northeast side, where she attended Saydel schools. As a child, Linda took dance and piano lessons. Upon her graduation from Saydel High School in 1966, she went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield in downtown Des Moines, where she worked until she retired in 2012.
Linda was not one to sit still. She loved people and being involved in the community. For 19 years she was the piano/organist for Marquisville United Methodist Church, then became the alternate organist for the chapel at Lutheran Hospital. She volunteered for the Ruan Des Moines Grand Prix, and at Living History Farms.
The Iowa State Fair was always a special event for Linda. Her father worked in the maintenance department which allowed them to meet many famous people. A special memory for Linda was meeting the Lennon Sisters, having a sweet corn dinner with them, and even visiting them at their California home! Linda volunteered several years as the chaperone for the Iowa State Fair Queens, accompanying them throughout the fair. Linda was also very involved with Iowa PBS. She could often be seen answering phones during festivals, or helping out at many events. Her favorite was Red Green!
Linda liked to travel and took many bus tours around the US. She enjoyed going to the car races at the state fairgrounds. She loved to line dance!
On a more personal level, Linda was very involved with her close friends’ families. She often attended county fairs, sporting events, band and choir concerts, graduations, baby showers, weddings, and many other special events for her “nieces and nephews”. For many years she hosted an Easter egg hunt at her home, and always handed out goodies at Halloween.
Linda remembered people’s names, and their jobs. She remembered their kids' names and the activities they were involved in. She had an organ in her living room, and would play an impromptu concert if you visited. She was so good at crochet, and made hundreds of beautiful afghans as gifts for graduations and new babies. She collected Smurfs. She liked to take pictures on disposable cameras. Linda bought yarn - a LOT of yarn. She loved her Saydel Eagles. She loved her cats. Linda lived life to the fullest.
Family will greet guests on Thursday, June, 12, 2025 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. Linda will be laid to rest at a graveside service at 11:00 a.m., at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Ave., Des Moines, Iowa.

I worked with Linda at Blue Cross Blue Shield in the middle to late 70’s. She always had a smile and was eager to volunteer. I remember her telling about chaperoning the State Fair Queens.

Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. Linda was a member of the Iowa PBS family. She was a devoted "Friend," attending events, handing out swag, organizing merch and greeting other "Friends." Her cheerful demeanor and friendly voice made her a pleasure to work with, and work she did! She tirelessly volunteered her time and talents on behalf of our Friends Foundation and the network. We will remember her always, but especially at Fair time! Peace be with you.

I will miss Linda. We became friends over a decade ago. I walked my dog past her house every day; she would watch out the window and would come out to pet Quincy, even though she was more of a cat person. She crocheted me pot holders for Christmas and would clap and jump up and down when I’d bring her baked goods. She was such a lovely person.
