Service Details

Lawrence “Larry” Ector Contri passed away on January 28, 2024, a Sunday, as he would have wished. To know him was to love him and to love him was an exceptional gift. Larry lived a full life. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he started attending the Iowa Teachers' College but was soon after called by his country to serve in the Korean War. Though he was always humble, he was proud that he fulfilled his duty in the United States Army. After getting his Bachelor of Commercial Science degree from the American Institute of Business, he worked in the Preferred Products Division at Supervalu for 33 years and then at Kraft Foods for 10 years. He served in the Auxiliary Police and as a Special Deputy for Polk County Sheriff’s Department for 8 years. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Christ the King Parish since its founding and was a devout parishioner for his entire life. He was born to Domenico and Maria (Gianni) Contri in the summer of 1931. He was the youngest of 10 and the last of the “originals” to pass. He was also preceded by his wife, Theresa, and his daughter, Anna. He is survived by his three children Pam, Anthony, and Micki as well as a large extended family and a community that loved him dearly. Many people made memories with Larry and he will continue to have a lasting effect on their lives.

The family will greet friends Friday, February 2, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3, 2024, also at the church. Larry will be laid to rest at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, Leukemia Society, Christ the King Catholic Church, or the American Heart Association in loving memory of Larry.

Larry was love and kindness.
