Kathryn "Kathy" Cooper

Kathy Cooper passed away on November 14, 2023, at Arbor Springs in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Kathy was born on January 11, 1956, to Tom and Betty Cooper in Sioux City, Iowa. In her childhood she lived in Sioux City, Knoxville, and West Burlington. She graduated from West Burlington High School, class of 1974.
After high school Kathy attended Northeast Missouri State and Nebraska Wesleyan to become a medical technologist. She spent her entire career as a medical technologist, proudly serving in Burlington, IA and Jackson, TN before joining the staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center where she spent more than 30 years.
Outside of work, Kathy had many interests including gardening and photography. She loved to travel, exploring the sights in both the U.S. and around the world. Photos from her travels adorned the walls of her home and filled many photo albums.
Kathy was always passionate about her dogs. In her later years she was a Spinone Italiano owner and was very active in the Spinone Club of America. She even traveled to Italy to buy a puppy to improve the gene pool of the Spinone Italiano breed in America.
Kathy will be remembered as a loyal friend and coworker. She was a loving aunt to her nieces and a surrogate aunt to her friends’ children. She was an active member of West Des Moines United Methodist Church and PEO.
She is survived by her brother Charles, sister-in-law Laura, and her nieces Britney and Charla of Dexter, MO.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 20, 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines, Iowa. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 21, at 10:00 am at West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Graveside services will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Kathy was on the very first photography tour I ever ran in Alaska in 2007. She had a wonderful eye and warm presence about her and was always smiling. I was very happy that we kept in touch here and there. She was a light and had a lasting impact in my life. She is very much missed.
