Kathryn (Kathy) J. Hansen
November 19, 1938 — January 26, 2025
Kathryn (Kathy) J. Hansen, a most wonderful wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend peacefully left this earth on January 26, 2025, at Edgewater Senior Living Community with her loving husband by her side.
Kathy was born to Ivan and Lucille Thompson on November 19,1938. She grew up on the East side of Des Moines (a fact she was very proud of) and graduated from East Des Moines High School. On May 22, 1960, she married Richard Hansen at First Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Theirs would prove to be a life-long love affair, having been married 64 years at the time of Kathy’s death.
Dick and Kathy settled in Urbandale, Iowa and raised their four children there. Whether tending to the memory garden at Faith Lutheran Church where they were longtime members, or knitting with her weekly group, she found joy in simple, meaningful activities. Her warm heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Kathy was known for her kindness, dedication to her friends, and her unwavering devotion to family.
Kathy and Dick were blessed with a second home in Marco Island, Fl. A place where they enjoyed the warm sunshine and shared many good memories with friends and family.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband Dick Hansen, her children, Robert Hansen, Susan Bunz, Mary Stephens (Bill) and Dave Hansen (Janel) seven grandchildren, Ellie and Emma Bunz, Malorie and Luke Stephens, Katie (Ty) LaFramboise, Ben and Anna Hansen and her sister Virginia Outland. She was preceded in death by her parents Ivan (who was killed in the Second World War) and Lucille and her grandson Sam Bunz.
A private graveside service will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer society, in honor of her grandson Sam, or to The Alzheimer’s Association, to work towards a cure for the disease that so significantly impacted her life.
