Judy Fiene
June 05, 1941 — March 16, 2025
Judy was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1941, to Everett and Beulah (Henson) Ford. She spent most of her childhood in Kansas City with her parents, older sister Doris June and a large extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. In 1954, Everett was transferred to Des Moines and the family moved into the Oak Park neighborhood and across the street from Dean Fiene, the boy she would later marry.
In June 1959 Judy turned 18, graduated from North High School and married Dean. They eventually settled in the Sheridan Park neighborhood in Des Moines and began raising their family (children Scott and Becky). Judy was always involved in church and kids’ activities, including serving as president of the PTA, being a Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls leader and many other things. She enjoyed frequent trips back to Kansas City to spend time with family. In 1976, Dean and Judy relocated to an acreage near Runnells where they lived until moving to Altoona in 2020.
Judy had a strong cadre of girlfriends, always meeting to visit and play cards. For several years she worked part-time at floral shops in Altoona where her friends also worked. She was very active with Ivy Centennial United Methodist Church where she served as UMW president and organized many other activities. Early in their retirement, she and Dean took many bus trips around the U.S. and Canada.
She was most proud of her family, especially her beloved granddaughters Miranda and Madelyn – she never missed their dance recitals, soccer matches, basketball games and other school programs. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she always decorated with hundreds of Santas, numerous Christmas trees, nativity scenes, lights and more. Christmas 2024 was very special as she knew it would be her last as she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer earlier in the year. Although the treatments took their toll physically, she remained mentally strong and faithful to the very end. She passed away on March 16, 2025.
Judy is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dean; children Scott (Lisa) Fiene of Ankeny and Becky (Patrick) Crowley of Austin, Texas; granddaughters Miranda Fiene (Ross Karsten) and Madelyn Fiene (Don Anderson); her sister Doris June; a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins; and her many cherished and lifelong friends and neighbors who were always there for her, especially at the end.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home., 105 4th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., at Centennial United Methodist Church at Ivy, 9150 NE University Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. Judy will be laid to rest at Canfield Cemetery in Altoona, Iowa.
