John Vincent Nigro, Sr. passed away on February 10, 2025, at the age of 92. He was born on January 22, 1933, to Peter and Angela (Gemelli) Nigro in Des Moines, IA. John attended Park Avenue Elementary and Lincoln High School. After high school he proudly served in the United States Army for two years, and then attended Iowa State University, graduating from ISU with his degree in Civil Engineering. John worked as a structural engineer for Peterson and Apell, and Brooks, Borg, and Skiles. After retiring from BBS in 1996, John remained professionally active, continuing to work independently until he was 85.

During retirement, John enjoyed several hobbies. On any Saturday morning, he could be found on the golf course for at least 18 holes. Carrying on the family tradition of a large garden, he spent summer evenings and weekends nurturing tomato and pepper plants and then cooking and canning the harvest. Later in life, John became an avid and creative woodworker. He enjoyed making side tables, benches, hutches, or crosses, for family and friends. In addition to his hobbies, he was happiest at home, spending time with his dogs and his large family.

John is survived by his wife, Roberta Nigro; children, John Nigro Jr., Don Nigro, Pete (Teresa) Nigro and Michelle (Matt) Carson; grandchildren, Taylor Nigro, Nina (Tim) Murray, Dominic Cosimo, Ariana (Barny) Thorold, Anthony Nigro, Talia Carson, Carmine Nigro and Cade Nigro; great-grandchildren, Sadie and Lincoln Murray and Nicholas Cosimo; sister, Mary Gilman; sister-in-law, Bonnie Nigro. He is also survived by many in-laws, nieces and nephews, and extended family.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Angela Nigro; siblings, Tony Nigro and Anna Marie Nigro; brother-in-law, Rich Gilman; and grandson John Nigro III.

Per his wishes, the family is hosting a Celebration of Life for John at Blank Golf Course on March 29th, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, any donations made to the family will go to support Lincoln High Activities, or feel free to donate to your favorite charity in John’s honor.

John’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
