Service Details

Together Again
John Michael McNerney passed away peacefully at Veterans Hospital Monday, September 9th after a short illness. He was 91.

A life-long Southsider, John served his country in the US Navy from 1951-1955. His service was remembered with an Honors Parade at Veterans Hospital. The family is forever grateful for the respect our Veterans paid Uncle John upon his passing.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife Phyllis McNerney and two sons, Johnny and Tom. John is survived by his grandson, Parker McNerney of Bethel, Connecticut, and an extended family of his in-laws, nephews, nieces, and their children. He is also survived by his youngest son Mark D. McNerney who was severely handicapped by a childhood illness and has required professional care for most of his life. For more than a decade, Mark’s aunt and uncle, Shelia and Thomas Fucaloro of Urbandale have served as his guardians, assisting John after his wife’s death, and now after John’s passing, to provide the love, care, and comfort that sustain Mark. Their service was invaluable to John in his last years.

John and Phyllis McNerney were married in Des Moines in 1964, and their son Johnny was born that July. Johnny Mac went on to star as a musician and singer in Las Vegas, on cruise ships in Florida, in Nashville, and in numerous shows and venues throughout the country. John and Phyllis traveled extensively to watch Johnny perform until her untimely death from cancer in February 2011. Tragically, Johnny Mac passed away from the same horrible disease just three months later. For the last thirteen years, John McNerney has looked ever forward to the day that he and Phil and Johnny could be all together again. Last Monday, that day came and they are.

There will be graveside services at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September 19, 2024.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Hope Ministries of Central Iowa in memory of John M. McNerney are encouraged.
