Jerry Addy
June 05, 1941 — January 11, 2024
After a week in ICU, Jerry Lee Addy, 82, had two life support systems removed, as were his wishes, and peacefully passed away a little after 4:00 PM on January 11, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving family and snored for a couple hours before passing, somewhat warmly reminiscent of how most family holidays ended.
Jerry asked us to remember him for the Iowa Public Employees Law that he helped to craft and pass as Labor Commissioner. He was the Democratic appointee of Republican Governor Robert Ray. He worked with a Republican Legislature; Brice Oakley was the Committee Chair. In short, the law gave public employees more rights for which they could bargain and be protected under grievances. It was a different time with different politics. The law has since been gutted, but it did serve an entire generation well before it went.
Jerry enjoyed working and had a long career whether as a labor commissioner, union business agent and activist (Operating Engineers, Local 234) political activist, political handler and driver, PAC lobbyist (Central Iowa Building and Construction Trades), or consultant. Everybody who ever worked with him has a Jerry Addy story, even President Joe Biden. While running for president in the early 2000s, Biden made the entire Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner listen to his Jerry Addy story of a colorful back roads trip of Iowa that Addy took him on the first time he ran (that shall remain not transcribed).
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Pat, who supported Jerry throughout, but especially at the end of his life. He is also survived by his stepdaughter Donya; his son Jim (wife, Christa), and granddaughter Faye, who he enjoyed doting over.
There will be no public services. To say goodbye, look for Jerry in the breeze or at E. 9th and Grand in the Iowa Workers’ Monument. At the request of Governor Vilsack, and later the support of Governor Culver, Addy worked to put together a committee to erect a public monument to the work and work ethic of Iowans on the State Capital grounds. Working as a SPPG consultant, and with the help of owner Tom “Sawyer” Slater, he engaged a committee to conceptualize, contract with an artist (Michael Stutz), have a design approved, build, and raise money to fund its care for perpetuity. You’ll find all these guys names on the Monument, along with a couple other great people who tried to make Iowa its best.
Jerry was busy with work, but he always had time for a sale, as he was Iowa’s original picker. Literally driving around Iowa to represent union members or escort political candidates, he found all kinds of sales for all kinds of items. Ever mention you need something, and you’d receive that item many times over – he just wanted to share.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Planned Parenthood and the ARL in memory of Jerry.

Sorry to say that I just found out about Jerry's passing today.
I met Jerry back when I was an intern on John Norris' congressional race in 2002. We kept in touch over the years. Every couple of months he would invite me out to lunch at Sambetti's. I loved the stories he told me in his very colorful way. We will miss you Jerry.

JERRY ADDY'S FAMILY
My heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Pat, and family members.
I didn't know your beloved husband, Jerry, but I skim all obituaries and noticed he crafted and passed:
IOWA PUBLIC EMPLOYEES LAW which created UNIONS for state employees in 1974!!
My late husband, Jack Gordon, Billy Dean Brown, both from Ames, Larry Kloppenburg from Marshalltown, and John Schultz from Newton/Grinnell were the ones for the IOWA DOT to start the 1st BLUE COLLAR UNION.
They had all their board meetings in our basement in Ames for years!
They worked so hard to get it going and keeping it going.
They were each union stewards representing employees going thru the grievance process for justice for years.
I was the secretary's steward for the Ames DOT complex.
Jack retired 1997 and I followed in 1998.
He and the other 3 would be rolling in their graves for Gov. Reynolds/co-hoots GUTTING the bill and taking away state worker's grievance rights!
That bill was passed 50 years ago and I believe it was around 5 years ago+ it was gutted.
We cannot thank your husband/others in legislature who HELPED public employees for fighting to stop injustices done to them and their jobs.
RIP JERRY ADDY; you/others made a huge difference for Iowa state employees. We never knew you, but so appreciate the efforts each of you foresaw for the future.

Pat, family and friends: Regardless of party, if you supported blue collar labor issues Jerry had your back. Jerry was one of a rather small team of dedicated Democrats and Republicans who made possible the drafting and passage of Iowa's public employee collective bargaining legislation in 1973-74. He understood the risks inherent in the workplace and the need to fairly reward those who faced those challenges day in and day out. He stood by his word. You always knew when Jerry was in the room sharing a story or giving one and all a piece of his mind. But he also knew there were times to talk softly but still carry The Big Stick. There is no better expression of Jerry's life than the clasping hands monument on the Capitol grounds. His family and friends can stand taller because of his having walked the walk with us.

Dear Pat, Jim and family, Jerry was a unique character. A big. burley building trades rep with a heart of gold. When he needed to he could be drop dead serious but most of the time he was charming to the point of being lovable. He was a wonderful friend to simply sit and talk to. He had a lot of stories about a wide range of people he knew and worked with. He genuinely cared about working people and his vision and work on the Workers Monument lifted them up to the same level all the other heroes remembered at the Capitol. He was a great friend and mentor to me and Ill miss him

I have know Jerry for over 50 years . I first met him when I was a young legislator and he was Iowa's Labor Commissioner. He was a very dedicated public servant and well like by members of both parties. I continued to know and work with him whether it was in his capacity as a labor representative or the special projects he worked on with State Public Policy Group. Jerry was a big personality totally committed to whatever he was involved in. We need more "big" personalities. My deepest condolences to his family and particularly to my distant cousin Pat. Pat, I know how much you enriched his life because he told me so.
