Jeane R. Dunagan

Jeane R. (Evans) Dunagan, age 103, passed away January 17, 2025. She was born in Staunton, Indiana, the daughter of Martha and Ray Evans.

Jeane graduated from East High School in 1939 where she met her husband of 69 years (Art Dunagan Jr.). She went to Iowa State for one year before entering Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing where she fulfilled her dream of becoming a registered nurse when she graduated in 1943.

Through her journey of nursing at Iowa Lutheran she held many roles, one was working in the Sister Kenny Cottage to treat polio patients. Her most fulfilling was being the Head of the Emergency Department and retired after 35 years. She was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. She loved gardening and growing her many rose bushes and flowers. Some of her happiest times were spent traveling the world with her daughter Joan. She loved spending time with family and always looked forward to visits from her great-granddaughter her namesake Ava Jeane.

Jeane was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Ray Evans; her brother, Donald Evans; husband Art “Doc” Dunagan Jr.; son, Art Dunagan III and son-in-law, Denny Goerndt.

She’s survived by her twin daughters, Joan Goerndt and Jane DeLapp; grandchildren Heather DeLapp (Davin Zink), Holly Ross (Ben) and Art Dunagan IV, and great-granddaughter Ava Jeane Ross.

Her family was her joy she will be missed by all who knew her.

Family will greet guests on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, Iowa. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Jeane will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Ave., Des Moines.
