Jay Tee Bennett
January 09, 1961 — July 12, 2024
On July 12, 2024, Jay passed away at home in his wife’s arms after a long battle with heart failure and diabetes.
Jay Tee Bennett was born to Clarence "Bud" Bennett and Juanita (Stockman) Bennett on January 9, 1961, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1968, a major event occurred with Jay’s aunt Esther passing away, leaving behind her three children. Juanita took all three children into her home. Instantly, Jay felt he had another sister and two brothers. He always wanted a little brother and getting two brothers was a blessing. Jay grew up with his siblings on the southside of Des Moines. His mother created a miniature farm in the city resulting in Jay learning a lot about living off the land, as well as raising and training horses.
On January 12, 1978, Jay married Linda Marie Huston in Des Moines, Iowa. Together, Jay and Linda had three children during their marriage; Jay Jr., Timothy, and his little girl, Abigail. Jay started his career with the City of Des Moines as a refuse collector in 1979. His thirst for knowledge and his work ethic as a public servant took him in full circle and he retired as the Administrator of the Solid Waste department. Jay retired in 2016, after 36 years with the City of Des Moines.
Jay is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda; his sons, Jay Jr., and Timothy; his daughter, Abigail; his four granddaughters, Kate, Cyra, Angie, and Lexie; his brothers, John Vargus, Jack Ackelson, Dennis (Connie) Huston and Randy Gohery; and his sisters, Nancy (Bennett) Floden, Jeleane (Simmons) Fox, Kathy (Vargus) Ackelson, and Lorri Huston.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Mryon (Mike) Simmons, Michael Vargus and Brian Floden.
Family will be having a celebration of life that will be held at a later date.
Jay had requested any memorial contributions be made to the family to be distributed at a later date.
Condolences may be expressed at www.Hamiltonsfuneralhome.com.
