Service Details

Jackie D. Ryan, affectionately known as Jack, passed away at the age of 89. Born on April 9, 1935, in Millerton, Iowa, he was the beloved son of Chester and Velma (Adams) Ryan. Jack passed away peacefully in July 29, 2024 in the comfort of the home he and his wife built together many years ago.

Jack grew up on a farm, where he spent his childhood baling hay and milking cows. He often shared cherished stories about the horses, Doll and Cricket, which he and his brother rode to school. Jack attended country school before graduating from Seymour High School in the class of 1953. He proudly served in the Army as a paratrooper, a role he absolutely loved. One of his favorite stories to share was about his first jump from an aircraft—he was so light that he wouldn't land, so they had to strap his Browning automatic rifle to him to weigh him down.

After his military service, Jack returned home to begin a career as a brick mason, becoming well-known for his creative and artistic eye. He enjoyed listening to old country western music, fishing, bowling in leagues, billiards, golfing with his grandsons, and joyriding in his Chevys. Jack and his buddies traveled far and wide to attend NASCAR races, with the Daytona 500 in Florida and the Michigan International being their favorites.

Jack is survived by his devoted wife, Dea (McLin) Ryan; his son, Marty (Darla) Ryan; his daughter, Sheri “Missy” (Scott Wascher) Kruse; his grandsons, Jarad (Brooke Ellsbury) Kruse, Jake (Tawny) Kruse, Cody Ryan, Dillon Ryan, and Austin Wascher; his sister-in-law, Inez Ryan; his nephew, Scott Ryan; his nieces, Kim Ryan and Mika (Dennis) Hudgens; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Marvin (Sweed). Known for his big, beautiful smiles, Jack was a loving husband, father, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation will be held on August 2, at 5:00pm at the Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street. Celebration of Life will follow the visitation at 7:00pm. A burial will take place on August 3, at 11:00am at Southlawn Cemetery in Seymour, Iowa.
