Herman Duane Virden
July 10, 1940 — April 18, 2024
Herman Duane Virden
of Des Moines, Iowa
Herman Virden, age 83, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born the son of John and Mildred (Gillespie) Virden on July 10, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Herman worked at Younkers for 45 years, he began as a pickup boy and worked his way up the ladder as a foreman dispatcher for the furniture trucks. Throughout the years, he loved gardening, cooking, and canning. He was well known for his hot banana peppers and homemade pizza sauce. Herman enjoyed watching football and his all-time favorite team was the Green Bay Packers. One of Herman’s greatest joys came from going to the Iowa State Fair, where he would take an entire week off from work each year and would go every single day from open to close. He will be remembered for his dancing even though he had zero rhythm. Herman could always put a smile on his family and friends' faces.
Herman had a big heart for cats. He especially loved his cat, Panther that his son gifted him. Nobody ever really knew what breed of cat Panther was nor did the vet, but he was BIG! Some of the most memorable times he had were spent babysitting his grandkids and his grand-fur-kids. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 64 years Norma Virden, sons Alan (Jeannie) Virden and Keith (Jennifer) Virden, grandchildren Amanda, Nick, Tony, Savannah, Jordan, and Jack, and great-grandchild Peyton and one more on the way. He is also survived by his brother Jerry (Sharon) Virden.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mildred Virden, and brothers John Virden and Virgil Virden.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., with funeral service to begin at 12 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for future designation in memory of Herman.

Sorry to hear about Herman. While visiting my Mom, passing and smiling by room 104, he was a constant in the daily routine. I shall miss him. Anybody who likes cats is all right in my book.
Norma and family, please accept my condolences and know I will be thinking kind thoughts for you every time I pass by his former room.

My best memories of him was when we would all go camping, never saw him without a smile on his face. Growing up, I always thought he was my uncle for some reason lol ❤️
