Gordon Lee Chidester
February 21, 1935 — August 11, 2024
Gordon Lee Chidester, 89, passed away on August 11, 2024, during a brief stay at Mercy Hospital.
Gordon was born on February 21, 1935, in Blakesburg, Iowa, to Kenneth and Viola (Johnson) Chidester. In 1947, the family relocated to Des Moines, where Gordon spent the remainder of his life.
He was a humorous, kind, and compassionate man eternally loved by family and friends, including the medical staff during his final days, who expressed how charming he was to them despite his ailing health. Gordon was always at the center of family life as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
He was always active and worked on the family farm during his youth. Later, he enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and cards with Karen, coworkers, and friends. He stayed loyal to his beloved Hawkeyes, whether they won or lost. Gordon loved fishing and spending time with Karen, the kids, and the grandchildren at his and Karen’s lake cabin near Leon. Summer vacations were often spent tent camping with the kids. Cuddling with grandchildren and his love for family pets, especially his cat Sis, was always at the forefront. He loved family gatherings, especially when his grandmother’s homemade custard pie or his mother-in-law’s ham balls were on the menu.
Gordon happily retired after a 30-plus-year career as a photographer with the Meredith Corporation. That gave him and Karen time to enjoy winters as snowbirds in Texas with friends.
Gordon is survived by his children, Mike (Lynn) Kellner, Debbie (Bob) Pastorik, Mark (Sara) Kellner, Tony (Jolene) Kellner, and Scott Chidester; his sixteen grandchildren; his twenty-five great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol (Bob) LaFountaine; and his brother, Richard Chidester.
Gordon is preceded in death by his wife, Karen; his parents, Kenneth and Viola; his grandson, Joshua; his brother, Ronald Chidester; and his sister, Ruth Cosner.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Jordan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Gordon.

I was so sorry to hear about your loss of Gordon. What a wonderful person he was. Perry and I shared so many fond memories of him and Karen; playing cards, our Canada trips on the houseboat, golfing and just visiting. His passing will leave a void in your lives that cannot be filled, but in your hearts, he will always be close to you.
