Glen Ivan Schrock December 16, 1937 – January 6, 2025

Glen Ivan Schrock, 87, of Altoona, passed away peacefully in the presence of his family on January 6, 2025, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines after a lengthy battle with Primary Progressive Aphasia and Alzheimer’s. He was born December 16, 1937, in rural Hutchinson, Kansas, to Rufus J and Edna (Troyer) Schrock.

Glen came from humble beginnings, attending a one room schoolhouse. After high school, he was the first from his family to graduate college with a Bachelor of Arts in Trade and Industry. Education, especially trade skills, was his passion. His professional career began as a high school industrial technology teacher in Newton, Kansas. In 1967, he moved to Waterloo, IA, where he developed and taught the skilled and technical courses as the Administrator of Industrial Technology at Hawkeye Tech (now Hawkeye Community College) for 28 years. He served on many professional boards, but most notably served through SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) for Iowa and the Midwest region.

Glen married Esther E. Schultz on August 30, 1963, and enjoyed 50 years with her until her untimely passing from cancer in 2013. They raised three children and enjoyed an active life of camping, fishing, gardening and boating. Glen’s engineering brain always had him designing and fixing things; like a hydraulic apple cider press, woodworking projects and working on antique cars; most recently, his jeep.

Glen’s faith was his life. He served as Elder, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and lead bible studies at Grace Brethren Church in Waterloo and sang in choir at Grace Church in Des Moines. He loved the Lord and served him faithfully.

Glen was a hard worker and loved traveling and serving others through their Shaklee business. After retiring, they volunteered with SOWERS (Servants On Wheels Ever Ready) all over the U.S. in their motorhome. He also managed a bed and breakfast, the Sunflower Inn in Yoder, Kansas, for several years. When Esther passed, he busied himself with projects and volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store where he got to tinker and fix broken appliances. It was his dairy farm upbringing that kept him active well into his eighties, even still having a mowing business at 84.

He was dearly loved and respected by his family and friends. His grandkids have fond memories of Grandpa including them in projects and many of them follow in similar careers of serving others, engineering and trade skills.

Glen is survived by: daughter, Christy Schrock Eichelberger of Pleasant Hill, IA; son, Casey Schrock of Des Moines, IA; sister, Susie Graber (Merle) of Peoria, AZ; brother, Lawrence Schrock, of Englewood, FL; grandchildren, Corey Eichelberger of Duluth, MN, Katelyn Rassmussen (Kyle) of Minneapolis, MN, Caleb Eichelberger of Iowa City, IA, Elizabeth Wootonn (Joshua) of Atlanta, GA, Chandler Schrock (Perla Kimberly) of Brownsville, TX, Benjamin Schrock of Eugene, OR, and Shelby Schrock of Altoona, IA, former daughter-in-law, Jessica and her husband Joe Larscheid; and many nieces and nephews and families.
