Gay "Cherry" Helton

Gay “Cherry” Helton, 78, passed away March 9, 2024 at Genesis Senior Living Center.

Cherry was born April 9 1945, in England and moved to the United States when she was 16 years old. She lived in Hawaii from 1970 to 1992 where she raised her 4 children. Cherry was the only female sous chef for the famous Waikiki Restaurant, Sergio’s for many years and made many dishes for famous people who dined there. She then called Des Moines, Iowa her home for 32 years, working as a General Manager at Denny’s for 15 of those years.

Cherry is survived by her sons Richard Q.C. Oyama, Charles R. Baugher III, daughters Nicole L Marta, and Teresa L. Bajo. Grandchildren, Antonio, Kalani, Angel, Kupono, Raven, Leilani, Alika, Kanani, Kawika, and 8 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two elder sisters, Wendy Uselton and Jean Wells. Also her grandaughter Champagne.
