Frances Maurine Stone
January 03, 1933 — July 24, 2024
Maurine (Frances) Stone passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024 in Des Moines. She was born on January 3, 1933 to Floyd and Hazel Lamb in Liberty Center, IA.
Maurine graduated from Indianola High School in 1951, and following a year at Simpson College, married Wendell Stone. After residing in Maine during Wendell’s service years, they came back to Iowa and stayed, spending the vast majority of their years in Des Moines’ Beaverdale neighborhood, where Maurine remained in their home after Wendell passed in 2010. In 2019, she moved to Wesley On Grand in Des Moines.
Maurine grew many beautiful gardens and flowers at their home. Known for her green thumb, she was surrounded by flowers and plants indoors and out. Gifted with a needle and thread, she sewed many kids’ clothes, school-dance dresses, curtains, quilts, and beyond. She retired from Principal Financial Group in Des Moines after more than 25 years.
Those who knew Maurine remember a quietly determined, caring woman who was reserved but warm and welcoming. Those who knew her well also saw her sharp but subtle wit, great humor, and fierce devotion to people and things she held dear.
Maurine is survived by her beloved daughters Wendy (Steve) Asher of Rapid City, SD; Stephanie (John) Long of Belle Plaine, IA; Jeannie (Paul) Thompson of London, UK; along with her son David (Wendy) Stone of Des Moines. She also was proud grandmother to eight wonderful grandchildren: Emma (Ardalan), William, and Annie Thompson; John (Desta) Long, Julie (Logan) Baburek, Josh (Mady) Long; along with Tyler, and Ben (Hanna) Stone. Two great grandsons, Luke and Landon Baburek, round out the family who love and will miss Maurine. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Julie, her sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Doyle Dixon, her husband, Wendell, and her son-in-law Steve Asher.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, IA. Family will welcome all at 9:00 am with visitation, service at 10:00 am, and burial to follow at 11:00 am at Highland Memory Gardens cemetery. All are welcome to join family back at the funeral home for food, companionship, and sharing memories following the burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to familiesforward.org in Des Moines in loving memory of Maurine Stone.
