Edwin Cameron Spiller, Jr.
March 26, 1933 — August 26, 2024
Edwin Cameron Spiller, Jr., age 91, passed away on August 26, 2024. Born on March 26, 1933 to Edwin and Doris (Minnich) Spiller, Cameron grew up in Urbandale, Iowa and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1951. He married Evelyn Louise Mitchell on August 27, 1953 and their family grew to include five children: Barbara (Dennis) Barnard; Debi Spiller; Bruce (Vicki) Spiller; Wendy (Mike) Ferraro and Jennifer (Greg) Phillips, all five of whom graduated from Urbandale High School, just like their Dad.
Whether you called him Ed, Cam, Dad, or Gramps, you knew him as kind, smart, and always ready with a smile for anyone. He loved family get-togethers, the mountains of Colorado, watching his favorite hockey teams, collecting fossils, his Scottish heritage, exploring nature, extensive Christmas decorating, and chocolate in any form – but especially a good brownie freshly-baked by Evelyn.
Cam spent his entire career as a United States Post Office letter carrier. He retired from the USPS after 36 years of service in 1988. Following his early retirement, Cam began a 22-year stint in part-time roles with HyVee in Ankeny, where Cam and Evelyn had moved in 1992 and remained until this year.
Spending time with his family was one of Cam’s greatest sources of enjoyment. He was always enthusiastic for every birthday or holiday because it usually meant a big family gathering was in the works. Cam eagerly looked forward to visits with his grandchildren whenever the opportunity arose and, along with Evelyn, even provided long-term daycare to several of their great grandchildren. He attended a multitude of athletic events, dance recitals, and graduations – always present and always smiling.
In addition to Evelyn, his wife of 71 years, and his five children, Cameron is survived by 8 grandchildren (Alissa, Megan, Todd, Erica, Stephanie, Abby, Amy, and Anna) as well as 11 great grandchildren (Ellie, Lexi, Camden, Austen, Dylan, Giovanni, Lucca, Owen, Penn, Kipp, and Gemma.)
Cameron was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Doris Spiller, and his sister, Carole Ann.
Family will greet guests on Wednesday, September, 11, 2024 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, Iowa.

I enjoyed working part time with Ed for 17 years at HyVee in the frozen department. We enjoyed talking about sports, politics and grandchildren. I appreciated his friendship.

So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I knew him from his time at Hy-Vee and always looked forward to seeing him and talking to him. I will always remember his kindness and of course his expertise and knowledge of gardening and landscaping.
