Donald William Van Ekeren

Donald William Van Ekeren was born to William and Mary Van Ekeren in Pella, Iowa. After high school he joined the army and served three years mostly driving trucks in Germany.
He married Linda Fry and after living for two years in Pella, they moved to Hartford, spending the next 55 years there.
Don was a talented woodcarver and active member of the Mid Iowa Woodcarvers club. He enjoyed making items to submit to the Iowa State Fair and other local and national competitions where he won many awards. These pieces were often then given away as gifts. Don loved carving special items for others and sharing his knowledge and skills with anyone interested in learning.
For the last 35 years, Don was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church where he served as an usher and a trustee on the board.
Don is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Darla Roberts and Lori Ruggles, 6 grandchildren, Tad (Corey), Zac (Nikkie), Tim, Jess, Erika, and Luke, 6 great-grandsons and 1 great-granddaughter, 1 honorary granddaughter Robin, brothers Marvin and Tom, and brother-in-law Norman (Lois) Fry.
The family will greet friends Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 1st at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Donald will be laid to rest with military honors at Hartford Cemetery in Hartford, Iowa.
