Service Details

Dixie Lee Newlon, 84, passed away February 5, 2024, at Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa with her family close by in her final hours.

Dixie was born July 20, 1939 in Stockton, California to Floyd and Virginia (Peak) Wallace. She grew up in the mountains of central Oregon. At age 17, she traveled to Farmington New Mexico where she met her husband, Robert Newlon. The couple were married in Cortez, Colorado and the newlyweds later moved back to Oregon where her two daughters were born. Dixie devoted these early years to raising her daughters. Dixie loved Jesus and ensured her daughters had many opportunities to know Him. Bob and Dixie moved to Iowa in the early 70’s to be close to Bob’s family. Dixie attended the College of St. Mary in Omaha where she studied nursing. Dixie was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

After her husband’s sudden death in 1991, Dixie traveled frequently to Oregon to help her aging parents. Dixie enjoyed photography and took photography classes at Des Moines Area Community College. Her camera was her constant companion at family gatherings, and she loved taking pictures of family and nature. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery and made gifts for the family. Dixie had a kind and loving spirit, and she was grateful for every day of her life. Her favorite times were spent with her loving family and helping the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our mom had an adventurous spirit. She loved to travel, and she was ready for a vacation at any time. Hitting the interstate for a road trip was her favorite! She was our treasure and will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing that she is at peace and had faith in Our Savior Jesus Christ. We will see you again.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

Revelation 21:4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.

From the Grandchildren

Grandma Dixie loved the little pleasures in life. Nothing made her happier than being with family or out in nature enjoying the birds and sunshine. She also enjoyed sewing, photography, watching the weather and going for drives. When she was younger, she loved to sing, garden and bake. She made the best potato salad, cinnamon rolls and cookies. She was incredibly generous and selfless. She felt the best when she was taking care of others. She had a peaceful and kind spirit, and the world was a better place with her in it. She was such a gift, and we will cherish our memories with her forever. You will be greatly missed, our sweet Grandma Dixie.

Grandma Dixie was always smiling and looking to the bright side of things, she never sweated the small stuff. She had a great sense of humor, her positivity was infectious and admired by anyone who knew her. She has truly been a wonderful Great Grandmother, Grandma and Mom. We love you Grandma and thank you for being such a great influence and blessing to our family and others.
