Darrel Herbert Blunck, age 89, passed away of natural causes on Sunday April 14, 2024 at his home of 65 years in Des Moines.

Darrel was born June 29, 1934 in Des Moines, Iowa to Cecil and Lena (Scott) Blunck. He had two sisters, Betty and Bonnie and three brothers, Jerry, Morris & Larry. Darrel was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School in 1952. While attending a high school dance Darrel met his future wife Patsy Ellen Stewart. They were married on August 19, 1951 and celebrated their 70th anniversary prior to her passing in 2022.

Darrel worked at Ford Motor implement plant and Bob Allen Sportswear before retiring in 1996.

Darrel's passion was his family and enjoyed summer vacations to the western US. He & Pat would plan the trips to see as many national parks as possible. This love of traveling continued with the grandchildren. Darrel and Pat enjoyed a once in a lifetime journey to China & the Great Wall. Over the years, Darrel attended countless school & sports events for his children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. With Darrel's passing we lost a special & humble man. He will be missed.

He is survived by his children, Karen (Michael) Caligiuri of Indianola, Scott (Beverly) Blunck of St. Augustine, Florida and Laura Blunck of Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Doreen Blunck; grandchildren, Michelle (Tim) Kelly of Norwalk, Eric Caligiuri of Indianola, Ryan (Sahar) Blunck of Chicago, IL, Lauren (Andrew) Gulotta of Rowayton, CT, Caroline Blunck of St. Augustine, FL, and Kaitlin Blunck of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Allison, Rachael, Olivia, Finley, Thomas, Aidan, Lily, Patrick and Juliana; and many extended family and friends.

Darrel was preceded in death by his wife, Pat and son, Kirk Von Blunck.

In honor of Darrel Blunck's life and his 90th birthday his family would like to invite family and friends to a Celebration of Life on Saturday, June 29, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Animal Lifeline.
