Colleen Devine-McKinney
April 03, 1929 — March 24, 2026
Colleen Devine McKinney, 96, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Born April 3, 1929, to Mervin and Alice (Bersie) Garvin in Stafford County, Kansas, Colleen grew up with a strong sense of family and faith. At thirteen, her family moved to Des Moines, where she later became a proud graduate of North High School—a place she remembered fondly throughout her life.
Colleen married the love of her youth, Bill Devine, and together they shared 49 years of marriage. Their home was filled with the joyful chaos of raising three rambunctious sons and the warmth of a large extended family, as Bill was the youngest of eight children.
After Bill’s passing in 1998, Colleen was blessed to find companionship again with Walter “Frank” McKinney. Married in 1999, Colleen and Frank embraced life with a spirit of adventure, cherishing their travels—especially their unforgettable drive to Alaska to visit Kent and family.
Devoted to her family and friends, Colleen lived with a generous heart. She loved water aerobics, cherished her Bridge groups, and found joy in simple moments shared with the people she cared about. Her presence was steady, kind, and full of quiet strength.
Colleen spent twenty two years working in Student Activities at Drake University, retiring in 1992. She touched countless lives there with her warmth, humor, and genuine care for the students she served.
She is survived by her sons, William “Kent” (Monica) Devine and Douglas (Dawn) Devine; daughter in law, Kim Devine; step daughters, Janelle McKinney (Rob Koberstine) and DeAnn (Jim) Jurgensen; eight grandchildren; one step grandson; and nineteen great grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.
Colleen was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Robert and Edward Garvin; her first husband, William “Bill” Devine; son, Kirk Devine; and her second husband, Walter “Frank” McKinney, who entered eternal rest just four days before her. Their reunion brings comfort to those who loved them both.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, or Drake University, in loving memory of Colleen.
