Catherine Maryann “Marion” McCarthy

Marion McCarthy, age 70, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 28, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born the daughter of James and Margaret (Emery) Murphy on August 26, 1953, in Cork City, Ireland. Shortly after, her family moved to the United States to Greenwich, Connecticut, when she was a baby.

After graduating high school in 1972, Marion moved back to Ireland, where she met her husband and the two began raising their family. In 2001, she move back to the United States, and made her home in Iowa. Marion volunteered at Meals of the Heartland, where she loved being able to give back to her community.

She loved being out in nature, watching the butterflies and birds, and had a deep appreciate for the beauty of the first snow. She was the kindest, most compassionate, big-hearted woman, who cherished her family more than anything. Whenever anyone needed anything at any time, she was just a call away. Marion will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is lovingly survived by her loving children Shane McCarthy, Trevor (Dannielle) McCarthy, Mark (Marie) McCarthy, Brian (Karina) McCarthy, Arthur (Jennifer) McCarthy, and Shauna McCarthy, many grandchildren that she loved deeply, brothers Liam (Gail) Murphy and Francis “Skip” (Max) Murphy, and many nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents, husband Patrick “Paddy” McCarthy, and beloved grandson, Justin McCarthy in 2021.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Ave. West Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in her memory.
