Carolyn Barnes, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Valley View Village. She was born the daughter of Clarence and Netalie (Stevenson) Pennington on May 16, 1934, in Des Moines, Iowa.
Carolyn was secretary for Norwest Bank, and she enjoyed directing the Christmas charity and chili cook off. Above all else in her life, Carolyn loved and cherished her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children Robert Barnes, Jr., Susan (Carl) Heuss, and Holly Barnes, grandchildren Kasey Barnes, Kelly Barnes, Renee Vos, and Hope Stevenson, Anton Heuss, Alissa Fletcher, Justin Heuss, Cumi Tran, and Ron LaRue, great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Olivia, Jacob, Charlee, Natalee, Xander, Aven, Kharis, Cyprus, Harper, Agatha, Maddie, Faith, Phillip, Niaya, Enzo, Alexa, Zac, Leomi, Shawn, Aden, and Brynn, great-great-grandchildren Charlotte and Damian, as well as a host of extended family and friends.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Robert Barnes, Sr., and brother William Pennigton, Sr.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Interment will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 17th at Glendale Cemetery. Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in memory of Carolyn.

Grandma Carolyn, we’ll miss you and that lovely smile so much. Thank you for always making us feel loved. We’ll hold on to those precious memories of laughter from your wonderful sense of humor and that peach tea we could never get enough of.
