Cathy Diane Johnston, 65, passed away Tuesday September 19, 2023 at Taylor House Hospice House in Des Moines from ovarian cancer. She was born March 25, 1958 in Des Moines to George and Betty (Cours) Thayer.
Cathy was a dental assistant her entire career and retired from Douglas Dental. She had a bonding relationship with many her patients who will miss her dearly. Cathy loved cats and rescued so many through the years and volunteered at the Animal Life Line of Iowa.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Mike Johnston; children, Amanda (Keith) Vanwinkle and David Johnston; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Christian) Tolbert, Madison Vanwinkle and Gavin Vanwinkle; great-grandson, Carter Tolbert; sisters, SuCarol Van Horn and Jeanne Mayer; brother, George (Elizabeth) Thayer along with many other family and extended friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Melissa Kaye Johnston; and brothers, Albert Thayer and Mike Thayer
Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday September 30, 2023 at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street, Urbandale with interment to follow at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the Animal Lifeline of Iowa, Inc., PO Box 12, Carlisle, Iowa 50047.

So sorry to hear of Cathy's passing. She was such a friendly welcoming presence at Douglas Dental. I have missed her a lot since her retirement. Deepest sympathy to her loved ones.

I am so saddened to hear of her passing. I worked with Kathy for a few years at Douglas Dental and she was the sweetest. I have not seen her for many years until 2 years ago I saw her walk by at John Stoddard while hooked to chemo myself and was unable to get up to say hello to her. I will keep the family in my prayers.
