Bill Michael Mendenhall
May 05, 1960 — April 04, 2025
Bill Michael Mendenhall, 64, passed away Friday, April 4, 2025, at his home in Des Moines. A private burial is planned for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Avon Cemetery.
Bill was born May 5, 1960, to Robert (Bob) E. Mendenhall Sr. and Sylvia (Hayes) Mendenhall in Des Moines. A real Southsider, Bill graduated from Lincoln High School in 1978. He raced motorcycles in his youth and loved cars and motorsports, especially NASCAR.
Bill spent the majority of his career as a welder and equipment hauler for Miller the Driller and later worked as a bus driver for Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART).
He loved animals and enjoyed feeding the deer and birds in his backyard on the south side.
The family would like to thank Bill’s special neighbor, Sissy Huddleson, for the care and friendship she gave to him.
Bill is survived by his mother, Sylvia; brother, Robert E. Mendenhall, Jr.; three children, Bailey Mendenhall, Madison (Billy) Branchcomb, and Cassadey (Travis) Cart; and three grandchildren, Kenny, Jenny, and Ayra.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bob; and his grandparents, Hoyt and Lila (Dudley) Mendenhall and Whitey and Elsie (Burgess) Hayes.
In lieu of flower, memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Bill.

Deepest condolences to all those who loved Bill. I remember him at Howe, Weeks and Lincoln. He was so full of energy and humor. And he had a lovely voice. I remember him as King Arthur in the Weeks production of “Camelot.” He embodied the role of a conflicted monarch so well. And like Arthur, Bill found a way to make the right choice.
May he rest soundly and fully. He will be remembered.

I knew Bill as far back as kindergarten at Howe Elementary. He was always kind and had a quiet gentleness about him. I wondered how he had been all these years later. I’m sorry he has passed so young. My condolences to the family.
