Beverly “Bev” Jean (Harlow) Nicolet
August 21, 1942 – September 1, 2025
Beverly Jean Nicolet, lovingly known as Bev, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on September 1, 2025, at the age of 83.
Bev was born on August 21, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Gloyd and Ruth (Hoskins) Harlow. She grew up in Des Moines, where she graduated from North High School, attended Grand View College, and went on to earn her degree from Drake University.
Bev’s life was defined by her love for children and her lifelong calling to nurture and teach them. She fulfilled her dream as a kindergarten teacher, later teaching preschool, and for many years opened her home to young learners through her own preschool program. She also served as a substitute teacher, Sunday school teacher, and mentor in countless ways throughout her life. Even at 82 years old, Bev continued to give of herself, joyfully volunteering with children at JCA Christian School and church children’s programs. For her, guiding little hearts and minds was both a passion and a ministry.
On June 12, 1965, Bev married the love of her life, Doug Nicolet. Together they built a beautiful family, raising their two sons, Brian and Brent. Their home was full of love, laughter, and faith, as Bev and Doug dedicated themselves not only to their family but also to serving others. For many years, their home became a gathering place for youth ministry events, where they encouraged and mentored countless young people.
Bev was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived her faith boldly and humbly, faithfully serving and worshiping at Oakwood Assembly for much of her life. She was a gifted caregiver, extending compassion to the elderly, and often sharing her musical talent by playing piano in nursing homes and care centers. Bev’s servant’s heart and unwavering love for Jesus left a lasting imprint on all who knew her.
Bev will be dearly missed by her sons, Brian (Jodi) Nicolet and Brent (Pam) Nicolet; her beloved grandchildren, Vicky (Austin) King, Hailey Nicolet, Alec (Kelsey) Nicolet, Bryson Nicolet, Amia (Champ) Champion, Zach (Makayla) Nicolet, Sami Nicolet; and her great-grandson, Noah King. She is also survived by her brother Chuck (Bendy) Harlow, her sister-in-law Patsy Harlow, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who treasured her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Doug Nicolet; her parents, Gloyd and Ruth Harlow; and her brothers Bob and Phil Harlow.
A celebration of Bev’s life will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Hamilton’s Near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Family will greet friends from 2:00-3:30, with services to follow.
Bev’s legacy is one of faith, service, and love. She poured herself into others—whether through teaching children, caring for the elderly, serving, volunteering, or offering her home as a place of welcome. Above all, she lived her life fully devoted to her Savior, her family, and the countless lives she touched with kindness, warmth, and grace.
