Virginia Ann Lawrence
July 04, 1926 — December 14, 2024
Virginia Ann Mobley Lawrence, 98, passed away December 14, 2024. She was born July 4, 1926, to Jerome and Mary Hannah (Haymaker) Mobley in Anderson, Iowa. She married John C. Lawrence in 1945 and to this union two children, John, Jr. and Patricia, were born.
Virginia graduated from Anderson High School and later received degrees from Peru State Teachers College, the University of Nebraska and Drake University.
Virginia loved children and spent forty-five years as an educator. She was a teacher, elementary consultant and principal in the Des Moines Public Schools for twenty-three years, always challenging students and teachers to perform to their maximum ability.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star working through the chairs and becoming Worthy Matron.
After retirement, Virginia enjoyed reading and spending time in her gardens, which were a joy, but her true passion was the challenge of a good bridge game.
Virginia will be missed by her children, John C. Lawrence, Jr. (Fran) and Patricia Valenti (Jack); granddaughters, Hannah and Carmel; great-grandchildren, Blake and Parker; and many relatives and friends.
A private family service will be held to celebrate the life of Virginia.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Care Initiatives Hospice or to Shriners Children's Hospital.

With deepest sympathy to family of Mrs. Lawrence who was my principal, mentor and friend. She was a master teacher and administrator. Her dedication and love for teaching and learning, and energy and enthusiasm was demonstrated every single day.

I was introduced to Virginia through my brother and sister in law (John and Marcy Schmidt). I enjoyed our many visits through the years. Virginia was warm and smart and sassy!!

Virginia was my principal at Lovejoy Elementary School in Des Moines. She was an educator in every sense of the word and she made me a better teacher. We kept in touch after we both left Lovejoy and it is a friendship I will always treasure. We shared a love of gardening and birds. I saw my first Blue Bird at her feeder.
She was truly a blessing in my life and many others. RIP Virginia.

Met Virginia about six years ago, she was standing outside with a plastic shovel in her hand attempting to clear her drive way off. Got out and clear the drive way off and since then we have been close friends. She enjoyed her flower garden and always talked about how good her neighbors were to be so helpful around the house. One thing I will be always be indebted for was that she always would send my older sister Mary Anne letters and cards during the holidays. She was a very special person and will be sorely missed.....Peace
