Vernis “Jasmine” Miller was born on March 11, 1927 to Dr. David R. and Rhoda Ingraham. She passed away at her home on June 28, 2026, at the age of 99.

Following her high school graduation, Jasmine attended York College in York, Nebraska. After receiving her Liberal Arts Degree, she married Leland Miller. Jasmine worked at the OD Hospital in Dayton, Ohio while Leland attended Bonebrake Theological Seminary. The couple later moved to Hudson, Iowa. Their son David was born on March 15, 1954, and in 1955, the family moved to Des Moines.

Jasmine received her degree in education in 1963, from Drake University. She taught 1st and 2nd grade at Park Avenue Elementary School for thirty years. Upon retiring, she was a volunteer in missions at McCurdy in Espanola, New Mexico.

Her two favorite sayings were, “Cherish all your moments, they make a fine cushion in old age” and “Every crisis is an opportunity to remember the good news of God’s presence and steadfast love”.

Jasmine is survived by her son, David Miller.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Denise Selby and her husband, Leland Miller.

The family will greet friends Friday, July 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church, 6205 SW 9th Street. Vernis will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
