Thomas "Tom" Mahedy
November 26, 1946 — November 30, 2024
Tom met his bride, Dianne, at a Christmas dinner dance, with Holmes Oldsmobile of Des Moines, Iowa, where they both were employed. They were married September 22, 1990, at their home with a wedding ceremony shared by the family of Westbridge Church in Des Moines. Tom was “born again” during this season of his life and began sharing his newfound faith with many, pointing them to the WORD (Bible) and a faith in Jesus Christ.
They moved to Coral Springs, Florida in 1992, along with Hurricane Andrew, with his employment as a manager of UPS Truck Leasing. They later moved to Ft. Lauderdale, where Tom started his own company, Diatom Development, Inc. He began teaching Bible Studies in their home. They attended The First Baptist Church of Ft. Lauderdale. One of his most precious memories was being involved with the award-winning annual south Florida Christmas Pageant, where he enjoyed the live sheep and camels walking down the carpeted church isle. Tom’s part was hoisting angels in the air flying over the balcony to arrive at their destination on the front stage in the church announcing the birth of Jesus Christ.
In 2003, the couple moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee, where they lived for 3 years, and later moved back to Des Moines, Iowa where he became a Licensed Insurance Agent with AETNA.
They moved to Park Trail Townhomes, where Tom served on the Board of 2009 - 2014, becoming President for the 2011 term. He always appreciated their neighbors, who watched out for each other, and helped without being asked.
In His Light Ministries Church, became the couple’s final church home. Tom called IHLM Church a reminder of the early church in the Book of The Acts of The Apostles. He referred to it as “an amazing small but mighty church where everyone knows each other and prays for each other.”
And finally, Tom’s heart was always, ultimately for his two sons, Tom and Steve, and his two grandsons. Included in their family picture also, were Dianne’s son, Jeff, and daughter, Shannon, and her five children, (grandchildren). Tom and Dianne prayed faithfully each night that their family would know the love of Jesus and His salvation (Ephesians 2:8-10).
In November 1970, Tom proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He began his service at Quantico, Virginia, where he attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) and The Basic School, preparing him for leadership in the Corp. Upon completing his training, Tom served as a Communications Officer with the 1st Marines as 1st Lieutenant and completed his tour in 1973, just before the President pulled the United States out of Vietnam. He has been active in the Veterans Affairs for many years and regularly attended a DAV Bible Study, making forever friendships.
Tom was born November 26, 1946, to William and Loretta (Engler) Mahedy in San Diego, California. He is survived by his brother, John (Sally) Mahedy from Lake Oswego, Oregon; his sons, Tom (Cindy) Mahedy from Federal Way, Washington and Steve (Brenda) Mahedy from Centennial, Colorado; his grandsons, Jackson Mahedy, from Boulder, Colorado and Quinn Mahedy from Centennial, Colorado. Tom was preceded in death by his parents: Honorary William P. Mahedy and Loretta M. Mahedy; and siblings, William P. Mahedy and Mary Shier.
Tom fought the good fight and ran the race. His heart’s desire was to come home, after 3 years in and out of the hospital and skilled nursing facility. Tom “is home now,” healthy, peaceful, joyful, walking those streets of gold, for all eternity.

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time"
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
he is mine forever.
