Service Details

Steven Oliver, 77, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 1, 2025.

There will be a visitation from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Born in Des Moines to Burrell and Evelyn Oliver, Steve spent his entire life in the city he loved. A graduate of Tech High School, Class of 1966, he went on to dedicate more than 35 years of service to the City of Des Moines.

Growing up, Steve enjoyed family trips to the cabin in Minnesota. He could spin quite a yarn about those road trips up and shenanigans on the lake.

Steve married the love of his life, Paula, and together they raised four children—Shawna, Cory, Tifany, and Cody. His unwavering support of them could often be heard from the sidelines of their activities.

He was a hard-working man, getting up everyday for his day job, night job, and many a side job in order to give his family all he could. He was a dog catcher, a deliveryman, a trolley driver and more. He was the family’s GPS before there was GPS.

After Paula’s passing, Steve carried on for nearly two decades, finding comfort in his grandchildren, NASCAR, and classic black-and-white television until his health no longer allowed. Though he faced many challenges, his stubborn determination kept him going far longer than anyone expected.

Steve is survived by his children: Shawna (Evagelos) Oliver, Cory (Davanh) Oliver, Tifany Oliver, and Cody (Emily) Oliver; grandchildren: Alyssa Oliver, Evan Oliver, Aidan Green, Darren Green, Olivia Oliver, Quincy Oliver-Knight, and Rex Oliver; sisters Kristy (Jon) Steele and Nancy (Bob) Pentico; sister-in-law Mary Oliver as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burrell Oliver Sr. and Evelyn Oliver; his wife, Paula Oliver; his grandson Reagan Oliver; and his brother, Burrell Oliver Jr.

Steve will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
