Robert “Umpire Bob” Charles Kroll
May 11, 1935 — January 12, 2024
Robert Charles Kroll “Umpire Bob”, passed away January 12, 2024. Services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Ave. in Des Moines on Saturday, January 20 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet friends following the service.
Bob was born on May 11, 1935, in Norwalk, IA to Frances (Roush) and Paul Kroll. His father served in the military so the family moved quite often. But when Bob was in high school, he lived with his cousins who were like second parents to him, Merle and Margaret Huff. At the young age of 15, Bob met the love of his life, Katherine Dondlinger. After graduating from Norwalk High School, Bob and Kathy were married and Bob worked for Delavan, Wallace Homestead, and then for Meredith Corporation until his retirement as a Plumber.
Bob was Chief Umpire for the South Des Moines Girls Softball for over 50 years and earned his title “Umpire Bob”. He was an avid reader and traveler – from his early years traveling with his service member father. Kathy and Bob traveled with their children, and later in retirement in their motorhome. Destinations included Europe, Ireland, and many of the 50 states.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Kathy; children, Bob, Jr. (Diane), Bill Kroll, and Kim (Bruce) Ballinger; 6 grandchildren, Aleisha (Lucas), Shawn, Kelly (Mike), Luke (Megan), Matthew, and Kyla; 7 great-grandchildren; and his brother, David Kroll.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Bill, and sister, Judy.

I've been coaching at SDM for 34 years, Bob Kroll was with me the whole time, he always made the game enjoyable wither we won or lost, Bob was the only umpire that I never yelled out, the good Lord made Bob a perfect person to be around young athletes, I shall miss him, I will never forget that man, & a man he was, this world has less value now that Bob Kroll is no longer a part of it, RIP my friend RIP

Bob was my favorite umpire at SDM softball. 🥎 I was a pitcher and he definitely had great eyes for a strike! IDE be off just an inch but he was right when I was. Bob made me a better pitcher and I thank him for that. Great Guy! ❤

One of the best umpires ever! I played softball many, many, many years ago and we were always so happy to have Bob as our umpire.
