Robert Thomas Esser
March 10, 1952 — April 03, 2025
Robert "Bob" Esser passed away April 3, 2025, closing a life rich in stories, music, and unwavering devotion to family and tradition.
Born on March 10, 1952, at Mitchel Air Force Base in Oceanside, New York, to Robert and Mary Esser, Bob spent his formative years in Racine, Wisconsin, alongside his mother, Mary, stepfather, John Winter, and cherished childhood dog, Pal. A proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Bob carried his love for the Fighting Irish with him wherever life took him and consistently within his wardrobe.
Throughout his journey, Bob lived in numerous states—including Texas, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, North Carolina, Tennessee, Indiana, and Kansas—each one leaving its own mark on his story. In 2017, after retiring from a career in accounting, Bob settled in Iowa with the love of his life, Linda, where they enjoyed their golden years together.
Bob was a passionate fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers, and of course, Notre Dame football. He had a deep appreciation for jazz and classical music, seeking out performances or listening in his living room, to feed his musical soul. Though an ardent dog lover, he famously kept his distance from cats—a preference that traced back to a legendary family tale involving a neighborhood “cougar” and poor Pal.
More than anything, Bob was a family man. He treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren and carried a warmth and humor that made him a beloved figure to all who knew him.
Bob married Linda on October 21, 1989, and the two shared 34 beautiful years together before Linda’s passing in February 2023. He was also preceded in death by his son, Sean Esser; stepson, Sean Scarborough; and his father, Robert Esser, mother, Mary Winter, and stepfather John Winter.
He is survived by his stepson Jeremey Scarborough; stepdaughter Joyce Sanchez (Francisco); stepsons Christopher Scarborough and Justin Scarborough; and many adoring grandchildren who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 7, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA.
Bob will be laid to rest beside his beloved Linda at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in a private ceremony.
