Rita Iceal Hill

Rita Hill, 81, passed away Friday, March 14, 2025 at Iowa MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Rita was born September 21, 1943 to Delores (Johnson) Hornocker and Dacy Hornocker in Chariton, Iowa. She taught special education for the Des Moines Public schools until her retirement. She received the prestigious Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. As an avid volunteer at Camp Fire, “Mama Rita” cherished her many summers volunteering at Camp Hantesa in Boone, Iowa. She enjoyed traveling and she was always up for a trip. She recently returned from two weeks in one of her favorite destinations, Spanish Wells, Bahamas. She enjoyed attending concerts, reading, sewing, and playing games and cards, especially with her bridge group.

She is survived by her children, David (Sharon) Hill, Jennifer Hill, and Jeanette Consolver; grandchildren, Mary (Janie) Consolver and Sarah Hill; brother, David Hornocker; niece, Debe (Bruce) Armstrong; and friend, Greg Sandvig.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Delores and Dacy Hornocker; brother, Chris Hornocker; aunts, Bonnie Johnson and Beth Bohrns; and cousin, Judy Hornocker.

Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2025 at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue in Des Moines, Iowa with visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
