Service Details

Richard “Rick” Cross, 61, passed away on June 25, 2025, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Rick was born on September 3, 1963, in Des Moines to Thomas Sr. and Linda (Galvan) Cross. From them — and his four siblings and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins — Rick learned the value of hard work and free-range play.

Rick was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. He attended Yankton College in South Dakota on a football scholarship until a knee injury ended his athletic career. He then enlisted in the Navy which took him on a tour of the pacific. Thereafter, he served in the Navy Reserve while beginning his civilian career in the construction industry.

Rick exuded warmth and charm. He was first and foremost a storyteller. It was always wise to confirm with either Rick’s father — Tom — or his wife — Bethany — before fully believing any word that came from Rick’s mouth. He loved the Iowa State Fair, his mother-in-law’s banana bread, and his garden. He also found great joy in showing off his culinary talents to his family and friends.

Rick was also stubborn and impatient. He was terrified of heights and snakes, and despised his wife’s cooking.

Rick was honored to serve as the Detachment of Iowa Sons of the American Legal State Historian under his mentor and friend Detachment of Iowa State Sons of the American Legion Commander Alan Schneck in 2019. He relished the opportunity to attend National Sons of the American Legion and American Legion national conventions in cities across the United States as a voting delegate. His outstanding service will be missed.

Rick spent much of the past twenty years battling the effects of diabetes — and the effects of not properly treating said diabetes. In between dialysis and hospital stays, Rick enjoyed fishing with his sons and fishin’ buddies, manning his Take a Veteran Fishing fundraising stations at local retail outlets, and spending time with his beloved service dog, Grommet. Most recently, he relished his freedom driving his scooter around town despite the inevitable interactions with law enforcement.

Rick died surrounded by his family and friends. Rick is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Bethany; children, Mason (Marissiah) Cross, Marshall Cross, and Myles Cross; parents, Thomas Sr. and Linda Cross; brothers, Archie Cross and Thomas Jr. (Melinda) Cross; sister, Lynnette Bullock; as well as a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Christina “Tina” Gilliland and his grandparents, Crespin and Emily Galvan and Thomas A. and Josephine Cross.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with a reception to follow at the American Legion Hispanic Post #731, 1511 South Union Street in Des Moines. Rick will be laid to rest with military honors on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Memorial donations may be made to any veteran- or healthcare-related nonprofit organization of the donor’s choice.
