Roberta Mott Traviss
June 25, 1929 — October 28, 2024
Roberta Mott Traviss was born June 25, 1929, on the Hulsizer farm located in Altoona, Iowa which is now known as Copper Creek to Walter and Clara Mott. At the age of four she moved to Runnells, Iowa and was baptized October 1, 1944, in Runnells Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a cheerleader and played on the girls’ basketball team all four of her years at Runnells High School. Beautiful as well as energetic, she was the 1946 Football Queen. Upon graduation in 1947 she worked in Des Moines as a secretary until her marriage to RM Traviss September 27, 1952. Roberta attended Staves Church upon her marriage to RM, joining in 1954, and she enjoyed her friendships she made while there.
Roberta passed away Monday, October 28, 2024, at the age of 95. She was blessed to raise and is survived by five children, Rhonda (Dwight deceased) Grieser, Sherri (Jim) Pike, Randy (Georgia) Traviss, Sheila (Bonita) Traviss, and Jeff (Kelly) Traviss. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Christopher Grieser, Sarah Pruneda (Antuand), Amanda Hohnstreiter (Jeremy), Caleb Pike (Nicole), Madison Traviss, Mallory Traviss, and Huston Traviss; four great grandchildren, Cadence and Maisie Pike, and Raegan and Rozlyn Pruneda. She was predeceased by her parents and four brothers, Carl (Joyce), Duane (Eunice), Arthur (Barbara), and Billy. Marilyn Mott is her surviving sister-in-law.
Roberta not only served as Vice President to Traviss Television and Electronics, she kept wise and compassionate counsel to her children. Roberta was a loyal Hawkeye fan, a collector of signed photographs of world leaders and celebrities, she loved people and animals, especially dogs and they all loved her. She was especially fond of Elizabeth Taylor and was tickled at their correspondence. She loved her flowers, shopping, getting her hair done and the friendships she made at the salon. She kept a daily journal of her thoughts, feelings and opinions that will be a legacy for her children. Mom wanted to be remembered as a person who cared for others. She loved calling on those who may have been forgotten. Mom remembered everybody and cared for their happiness. Her family meant the world to her and she was thankful for her friends. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her honor to Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Staves United Methodist Church, or Runnells Christian Church.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 East Madison Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. There will be a luncheon immediately following the funeral. Burial will then take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Much love to you Sheila, Sherri, Rhonda, Rhonda, Jeff (all of your partners) and the grandchildren and great grandchildren and surviving sister-in-law. Bert was a strong and beautiful woman. And like Elizabeth Taylor beautiful outwardly and inward. Thanks to streaming, Linda and I were able to join the beautiful service you created to honor Roberta (Mrs. Traviss or Bert as I knew her growing up). She lives on in our hearts and sharing her words was a gift to all of us and lovely legacy to all of you. I learned much and laughed often in her presence. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to know her. I know she deeply love RM and they built an amazing family and gift to Des Moines of strength and kindness. Peace to Roberta and all of you.

Walt and Clara Mott were neighbors of my Mom and Dad in Runnells. I had a little nest in Clara's flower bed. Walt gave me a parakeet. Last week I just made Clara Motts pumpkin bread. Truly amazing, wonderful family. Heaven became a more beautiful place.

I have been lucky enough to hear the best Roberta Traviss stories over the years from my dear friend, Sheila Traviss. Roberta was a force of nature - I was lucky to meet her once and I am grateful for that moment.
Rest well, Roberta.

I will never forget her sweet voice, and what a class act she was.
Such beauty and grace.
I remember how she always kept in touch and wrote to see how we were all doing down here in Texas way before aunt Haida ever moved down here.
Even though our families were so far apart and I had been so young when I last visited prior to aunt Haida’s passing… my mom, Marla and my grandpa norm and my uncle normie always talked about all of you so highly. When aunt haida moved to Texas right up the road from us she told the best stories and it made me feel like I grew up with RM and Bert, as well as all of you kids and van.
And your kids are all so great too.
What a blessed family, and I feel blessed to be a part of it even though so far away.
My great aunt Bert was such a wonderful soul.
that smile, her gorgeous hair and she was always dressed to go somewhere important it seemed by her outfits.
I know your community is going to be missing another fabulous Traviss, and tears roll down my face as I wished I could be there to give you all a huge hug.
May God comfort you all throughout.
I love you all so much!!!!

Roberta
I always so enjoyed listening to your stories about your children's antics and behaviors growing up.....I'm sure they were a handful....I know some of them. Your capacity to love and foster love beyond your family will always be remembered. I will miss you.......

Roberta was a wonderful woman. I met her family when I joined the membership of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church as an 8th grader in April, 1967. At that time, Roberta's husband R.M. was my Sunday school teacher. Over the years, I admired, appreciated and respected both R.M. and Roberta and their 5 wonderful children. Truly a life well lived. Rest in peace Roberta.
